General Purpose:
Under the general supervision of the Senior Center Director. This position is responsible for meals being prepared and served on time. Makes certain food temperatures are maintained according to Health Dept. standards. Ensure that food products needed for the following day are washed and pre-prepared as needed; is responsible for desserts for each day.
Essential Functions:
- Prepares lunch for senior citizens using available food service equipment.
- Must enjoy working with and interacting with senior citizens.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
- Multitasking. You need to be able to pay attention to multiple tasks at the same time, from remembering the dishes ordered by guests to cooking several dishes together.
- Dexterity. Your manual dexterity can prove useful on the kitchen when doing intricate chopping and handling different instruments.
- Attention to Detail: A cook needs to be precise in ordering food products, measuring the ingredients or figuring out what time to cook certain food items.
- Cleanliness: You need to know how to keep the kitchen clean because unsanitary conditions can affect the quality of food.
- Organization: Since cooks have to often multitask and work with different items at once, keeping the kitchen organized is a must to create order in an environment that is chaotic.
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; or combination of education and experience.
Tools and Equipment:
Food service equipment such as knives, mixers, stoves, ovens, steamers, automated devices such as coffee makers; measuring devices, pots, pans, utensils, and other food service equipment as necessary
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, talk, and hear or listen. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50
pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally may work with toxic or caustic chemicals.
